Standards and Criteria

Effective management of our water resources, especially within an intergrated startegic framework, requires that actions and measures are benchmarked against acceptable standards, and criteria be developed for assessment and monitoring the uptake of such standards. Most standards and criteria particularly refer to maintaining an adequate level of water quality, whether for human consumption, or for discharge into water bodies. Water quality standards define the goals for a waterbody by designating its uses, setting criteria to protect those uses, and establishing provisions to protect water quality from pollution.
